Module-Based Training

These courses are designed for serious students of any level of yoga and meditation, prospective yoga teachers, and teachers intending to deepen their study.

For those who wish to become certified as a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher, you could include each of these as one of nine modules needed to become certified through Yoga Teacher Training Kingston. The modular program allows you to budget your resources and balance this training with the rest of your life. The 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training program can be completed at your leisure over the course of nine singular modules. This self-paced modular approach to your yogic education allows you to customize a pathway based on your own unique needs. You could complete all nine modules in up to 36-months in order to quality for a 200-Hour YTT certification or you could take a single modular here and there to further your knowledge or to refresh or renew your skills and gain valuable "Continuing Education" (CE) credits at the same time.

For registered yoga teachers not wishing to obtain a second 200-Hour YTT certification, these workshops are eligible for Continuing Education hours with Yoga Alliance, as I am a Yoga Alliance Certified Education Provider (YACEP). The YACEP designation is designed for experts in the yoga community to set themselves apart and teach courses that qualify as Continuing Education hours for Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs). By participating in this training, RYTs can count their training toward meeting their Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Requirements.

MODULE ONE
Fundamentals

JULY 04 - 06, 2018
Wolfe Island
At this moment in our history, we are experiencing many great shifts on our planet that require each of us to rise up as our best selves. In this module, we look to the ancient wisdom of yoga for our answers. We will learn about yoga's history, contemporary challenges, and our potential role in shaping it's future on and off the mat. We will also introduce a framework for training informed by exercise science to understand tissue adaptation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Study yoga philosophies and traditional texts (such as the Yoga Sutras, Hatha Yoga Pradipika or Bhagavad Gita) and discover how we can use these texts to inform our practices today;
  • Bring together yogic histories discussed in our required readings to better understand the origins of yoga, the history of the philosophy, and how yoga has evolved;
  • Learn about the ancient yogic practices of pranayama, mantra, mudra, and meditation, including benefits and contraindications, and understand how one might integrate these techniques into your practice;
  • Determine what a well-rounded Hatha Yoga practice is lacking;
  • Redefine how we see the body and understand the concepts of tensegrity and joint centration;
  • Understand the role of mindful strength, mobility, and the nervous systems’ role in adaptation; and
  • Learn the science behind how our bodies respond to our asana movements to ensure we are stressing our tissues for therapeutic growth or change and decreasing our risk of injury.

Pranayama Anatomy Of Breathing Restorative Yoga Certification

A thorough and varied examination of the many ways our bodies shape our practice and visa versa. We will explore classical principles of yoga, combined with an understanding of physiology, biomechanics and anatomy as well as energetic anatomy, such as chakras, nadis and koshas. In this module, we will learn about how yoga postures affect and are effected by major body systems; functional movement; biomechanics; and energetic anatomy. We will also discuss body positivity and how your practice can nurture self-love.

The Subtle Body Anatomy Of Movement

Why is there so much focus on the breath in yoga? What is the link between yoga and breath, and why is it so important (besides the fact that it keeps us alive)? In this module, we will learn about the classical philosophy of prana, life force, and pranayama, expansion and control of the life force. We will first explore the theory of prana and its related yogic concepts: koshas, chakras, nadis and mantras. Then, we will expand upon respiratory physiology and current research undertaken by science on pranayama. In the practical component, we will undertake a thorough examination of Restorative Yoga as we practice pranayama and link pranayama and asana. Each registrant will practice and teach to feel confident sharing these skills in drop-in classes with their students.

Asana

In this module, we will break asana down to their foundation and learn some of the most common standing, seated, supine, prone, and inverted postures inside out. We will experience how to best achieve desired outcomes in asana through manual adjustments, deliberate placement of props, and varying lengths of time in the poses. We will also analyze common cues and popular buzzwords in yoga to improve accuracy and clarify ambiguous instructions. We will practice anatomical, emotional, spiritual, and historical cues as well as visual, kinaesthetic, and auditory cues to cater to all types of students. For each asana we examine, we will evaluate the benefits and contraindications and create a clear understanding of it's role in practice., so that asana may be chosen thoughtfully and carefully in practice.

The Art Of Class And Program Creation

Using a lesson plan as a yoga teacher can give organization, direction, and a larger sense of meaning to your students. Much as in traditional academic environments, having a class syllabus can help you and your students improve and stay on track with a specific goal in mind. In this module, yoga teachers in training will learn how to create a lesson plan based on a learning outcome; progressive sequencing strategies; class frameworks; theming classes; the basics of timing classes and staying time; and playlist options, so that graduates feel confident creating classes for a variety of populations.

Empowering Your Practice

Seize this opportunity to deepen your knowledge and refine your voice as a teacher. In this module, we will practice advanced teaching methodology; meditation and mindfulness training; safe and effective hands-on adjustments; and exploring options for various communities (trauma-informed classes, yoga for seniors, teaching to children, yoga for bigger bodies, chair yoga, etc.). You will walk away able to teach specific classes for these populations and with a back pocket of modifications should you find these populations in drop-in classes that you teach.

 Holding Brave Space For Inclusivity

In its most basic definition, a community is a group of people interacting in the same location—for example, people taking a yoga class together - a yoga community quickly becomes much more than that. As the primary figure in classes, a yoga teacher is creating community, whether s/he intends to or not; however, the subtle art of building community can have dramatic impacts on your life, the lives of your students, and your business. In this module, we will discuss the importance of ethics, leadership, and community building. We will learn more about the business of yoga; create captivating classes descriptions that speak to your ideal clientele; and learn how to consciously create one-on-one classes, workshops, and retreats. In dong so, your business, your life, and the lives of your students will be enriched.

    These modules are designed to challenge you. I am definitely here for support; however, I ask for a high level of maturity and responsibility from all participants. You can expect these modules to be demanding, but equally rewarding. These modules offers a comprehensive way to deepen yoga knowledge and inner inquiry as a first stepping-stone in my "Wonder • Learn • Integrate • Share" model of teaching.

    CERTIFICATION CRITERIA:

    Should a practitioner wish to certify as a 200-hour trained Hatha Yoga Teacher, they must complete all nine modules and hand in all assignments within 36-months of beginning the program. 200-hour Certified Yoga Teachers from Yoga Teacher Training Kingston must possess the skills and abilities necessary to safely and competently teach yoga in a group setting to the general population, including modifications for demographics often present in a general yoga class, such as plus-sized people, pregnant people, aging populations, etc.

    For registered yoga teachers, Individual modules are eligible for Continuing Education hours with the Yoga Alliance, as I am a Yoga Alliance Certified Education Provider (YACEP).

    Please note, I reserve the right to withhold certification from any student who fails to develop the skills necessary to competently and safely teach. Rest assured, every attempt will be made to provide input throughout the training about teaching deficits that might impede certification.

    I will use the following criteria to establish student eligibility for certification:

    Practice Teaching: Every module includes some time to practice and hone the skills and apply the information being taught throughout the course. Ample in-class time and support from myself, your peers, and our online and print resources will be available, so you ought to be fully capable to complete this task come evaluation time.

    Attendance: Those who wish to receive YACEP credits or who are taking this module as part of the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training will need to be present for 100% of our in-person time, unless you have received written permission from me. Concessions can be made for medical reasons with a doctor's note. You must make up in-person hours missed and are responsible for the content we covered in that time. In order to certify, you may need to pay for additional one-on-one time with me.

    Concept Review: Throughout this course, you will be required to write written concept reviews based on the material in the required readings, from the in-person lecture, or that is contained in your manual. You must achieve a minimum of 75% on these test in order to progress. These tests will be done together in class and the answers that you get wrong will be reviewed before your opportunity to retake the test (i.e., everyone ought to get at least 75%, so don't lose any sleep about this).

    Assignments: All course assignments must be completed and submitted by their posted due date in order to receive your certification.

    Fees: All fees must be paid-in-full prior to receiving YACEP certification. Registrants who do not pay their balance 14 days prior to the first date of the module and who have not made a payment arrangement will not be able to attend in-person components. By registering above and paying your $100 deposit, you are indicating that you are fully committed to the program and intend to pay the remaining balance due 14 days prior to the individual module you are interested in attending, unless a payment arrangement has been made. Any registrant who withdraws less than 14 days prior to the individual module they are interested in attending or is removed for misconduct, payment failure, or not abiding by the course requirements, will not be issued a refund for this course.

    Professional Behavior and Ethical Conduct: All registrants are required to behave in an ethical manner to help create and maintain a safe and professional learning environment. Registrants must abide by our Code of Conduct. Alcohol or drugs are prohibited during in-person training and any participants found to be under the influence of these substances will be asked to leave for the remainder of the session. If a second warning is required, they will be asked to leave the remainder of the course.

    By completing this application, hitting APPLY below, and submitting your deposit by contacting Life Yoga at 613-546-5100, you are indicating that you have read, understood, and agreed to all the above criteria.
